Inspiring Words Deserve
a Second Read Through

by William Zelazny, District Executive

At a workshop a few weeks ago the usual concern about not having enough volunteers surfaced in our discussions. I was reminded of an article published here in June 2005, an essay by Joyce Pickle, a member of First Parish Norwell, originally read at the BCD 2005 Spring Conference. We present it again, slightly edited for length, for inspiration for volunteers being asked to serve again and maybe to be used by nominating committees as they work to find leaders for next year.

Reflections of a Reluctant Steward

I must confess, I had had many years as an uninvolved (read carefree) parishioner who attended church somewhat regularly and sang in the choir sporadically. Then, three years ago, I was asked to serve on our Parish Committee. Oh God, I thought, not that!!

I was completely caught by surprise, and decided that they must be desperately scraping the bottom of the barrel. I was no stranger to church board work, having served on a church governing board and the BCD board in the past. To be polite, I said I would think about it. I planned to decline.

Why do people agree to serve on church committees, especially governing boards? Why are you active members of your congregations? There are many reasons and motivations.

In the end I reluctantly decided to say yes. Why? After being a member here for 22 years, it was only fair that I take a turn.

I have to confess that I am glad I said yes. Sure, there were times I wanted to be doing other things, but here is the thing, those were two of the most rewarding years of my church life. Besides gaining a greater understanding of the complex issues of the day-to-day running of this church, I forged new friendships, accomplished satisfying work, and experienced personal growth. As a result of this experience, I have a deeper spiritual connection to this church community and to our denomination, a feeling of ownership that causes me to stay involved.

Church work grounds us in our spiritual values and brings an inner peace. Giving of our time and energy, can turn out to be a wonderful gift to oneself. My advice is to get involved; say yes when asked to serve, say yes when asked to participate, say yes when asked to give time, energy, money, love. Say yes and be richer for it. Say yes and give yourself the best gift of all, a beloved community.
